“The Naked Director” must be the very first Japanese programming that became an international hit on Netflix. The series debuted last summer in 190 countries and regions, subtitled in 28 languages, and dubbed in 12 languages.
It is about a legendary adult video director Toru Muranishi during the bubble economy in 1980s. The show illustrates the life of “the king of the adult video industry” with some fiction.
Thanks to the increasing popularity of the home video systems in the late 80s, Muranishi sold more than $100 million worth of the adult videos in a year. He was the hit maker in the porn industry. But in a later year, the US judicial authorities filed a charge against him for the illegal shooting in Hawaii and demanded a 370-year in prison sentence for him. His attempt to start a new business left him with $50 million in debt. His life was absolutely full of ups and downs. Today, he is a legend and still active in the porn industry. The life of Muranishi was turned into a drama with the help from the screenwriter team of Narcos. The set of Japanese cities in the 80s recreated by the team of artistic staff from Hollywood and the actors’ intense performance are worth watching.
Season 1 ended where Muranishi was about to reach the peak of his success. The speculation is that he will take a tumble from the success in the season 2. We cannot wait for the new seaon!
