Khachapuri is a traditional pastry in Georgia, a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia by the Black Sea. Bread is often shaped like a boat and filled with cheese, raw egg and butter.
On April 22, 2020, Mr. Teimuraz Lezhava, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Georgia in Japan, came across a tweet about this Georgian staple food. According to the tweet, a Japanese bread manufacturer Fujipan released a savory pastry called “Khachapuri – Egg” and it was inspired by the authentic Khachapuri.
Mr. Lezhava tweeted he was heading out in search of “Khachapuri – Egg” to investigate. After his successful trip to a nearby supermarket on the same day, he tweeted again with much emotion. “I want to let our ancestors know that Khachapuri has made a long journey and is available in an evolved way in Japan.”
